Even having our bodies in a state of momentary stress causes our bodies to respond chemically in many ways, none of them good.

STEP 01.
Establish a Goal.

Think of a goal that you want to achieve. A goal is not something that you would ‘like’ to have or achieve, rather a goal is something that you deeply desire.

Your goal must be a burning desire.

This burning desire should be something that you 100% consider a ‘must’ to achieve.

It is something that will cause you to go the extra mile for it, to stay awake two hours later in the evening in order to work on it, or to rise an hour earlier for it – this burning desire should be a continual driving force inside of you.

Is it a car that you are desiring?

Is there a house that you have been dreaming about?

Maybe it’s your lifestyle that you want to change.

Do you lead a happy but dull life and desire to be more outgoing?

Do you want to wear designer clothes, buy expensive watches or dine at exclusive restaurants?

Maybe you want to save $20,000 in the next three months to buy your loved one a special gift as a surprise.

Perhaps you need money to undertake some medical treatment for yourself or a member of your family.

Whatever it is that you want, and for whatever the reason may be – make a conscious decision and take as long as you need to think about your burning desire.

Then write it down in a notebook or journal.

This Means Actually ‘Thinking’ Properly.

This means taking time out from the normal ‘noise’ in your universe and the negative input from other people or friends, family, co-workers, radio, music, television and social media etc.

This means taking precious time out of your wonderfully busy life in order to plan and create a life that you actually would be proud to live every single day.

There will be those that tell that your goals and ambitions are improbable.

Pay no attention to these people, these are people who have no idea what you are capable of achieving.

In fact, at this stage I would advise you to keep your burning desire and goal/s to yourself.

Remember:
You are trying to Successfully Achieve Your Goal – not someone else’s.

Do not allow anyone or anything to make you lose the focus on your goal/s.

There are two vital parts of goal setting that you should be aware of.

Leaving out any one of these parts will certainly lead to the failure to succeed or to maintain any initial success.

(a) Imagination & Visualization

“If, in your mind’s eye you see a successful venture, a deal made, a profit accomplished, it has a superb chance of actually happening. Projecting your mind into a successful situation is the most powerful means to achieve goals. If you spend time with pictures of failure in your mind, you will orchestrate failure.”

(b) Establish your major ’Why’ and incorporate this into your goal

“He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.”

The visualization of your goal is important because that image that you have in your mind is what is initially going to spur you on to its eventual realization.

The ‘why’ will keep you going when your ability to maintain the visualization begins to fade on account of it taking longer to achieve your goal or when you inevitably encounter setbacks in regard to the said goal.

For example, if you were to say:

“I want to make an extra $4,000 per month so that I can afford a bigger house for my family.”

You first have to imagine or visualize the type of house you want. You must research the prices of the house that you want.

Focus on the particular area where you would like the house to be. You should even go as far as cutting out pictures in magazines and putting them in your journal that I mentioned earlier.

In fact, when a personal friend of mine desired a particular property, he often went and drove down the street – suffice to say, eighteen months later, helped by supportive action – he lived there!

So, these positive steps can increase the power of the visualization process exponentially.

In addition to this you must:

Establish your ‘Why’.

This could be:

“Having a bigger house will make my partner happier”.

“The children will have more space for themselves and not have to share bedrooms”.

“We could have barbeques in the garden so I could invite my friends round more often to watch the game”.

“I could have a bigger garage, so I store my tools and fishing gear safely”.

In all of these statements, the ‘why’ is strengthened by the use of benefits. These benefits will keep you motivated to keep striving towards your goal even when you feel disillusioned. These two things are vitally important to your success.

Read the above quotes again and then review your goals. After reviewing your goals, make them stronger by adding powerful success benefits to each one.

STEP 02.
Create an Effective Plan.

“Whatever your goals may be, fix them in your mind and never let loose. Understand that even this may not be sufficient, for life is unfair. Not all who work hard and patiently and have goals will achieve success. Without any of these three ingredients, however, failure is a certainty. Give yourself every chance to succeed…

Draw up your plans today. Ask yourself where you will be, a year from today, if you were still doing the things you are doing now. Then decide where you would prefer to be in terms of wealth or position or whatever your dreams may be.

Next, plan what you must do, in the next twelve months, to reach your goal…”

If you fail to plan you have effectively planned to fail.

I consider an effective plan to be the equivalent of having a visual ‘road-map’ to success or goal completion.

This ‘road-map’ will serve as guidance for you so that when moments of doubt, pessimism, weakness or fear enter your mind, you are able to look at your plan and instantly see where you are in terms of progress.

Many people give up on their goals because they have no way of accurately seeing where they are in relationship to their plan.

Now, remember what Albert Einstein said in the quote earlier?

Well, for any plan to be effective it needs to be achievable, measurable and broken down into small parts. The smaller the better in fact.

Start with the end in mind.

Then work backwards.

Use this acronym:

K.I.S.S.  – Keep It Super Simple

For example:

If your plan is to develop a ‘washboard’ set of abs, then start with the end in mind i.e.

  1. Having a washboard set of abs.

Then ask what is needed to get them.

  1. Exercise.

  2. Eat the correct food.

Now, flip these 3 things upside down so that 1, 2, 3, becomes 3, 2, and 1 like this:

  1. Eat the correct food.

  2. Exercise.

  3. Have a washboard set of abs.

Now for each of these steps, break them down into smaller parts. So it would look something like this:

  1. Eat the correct food:

Research low fat, high protein healthy foods.

Research recipes and meal plans.

Purchase the ingredients for meals

Remove ‘junk’ food from house.

  1. Exercise:

Research the appropriate exercises to undertake.

Set aside 5 minutes in the morning and evening for two weeks.

Increase the activity to 10 minutes, morning & evening for a further two weeks.

  1. Review the progress after one month and amend parts of the plan if needed.

Continue and amend…. Until the desired outcome is achieved.

This is why you have the plan. The plan is the path – the guiding light, the moon in the darkest night. When you have doubts or fears or lack that moment of clarity – turn to your plan for guidance.

You created the plan, so have faith in it.

STEP 03.
Take Immediate Action.

Nothing ever occurs without action – think about that statement for a while!

Any plan, no matter how poorly conceived, if boldly executed is better than inaction.

Taking action will give life to your plan. A plan or thought without action is a daydream. Action is a vital component in your quest for the attainment of success and wealth.

For your plan to be effective, you must take immediate action!

So often people have their plans and ambitions stolen by the evil twin of action – called procrastination.

The only thing that can conquer procrastination is immediate action.

Think for a moment, and recall the times that you had what you considered to be a good idea or a desire to do something.

Whether it was developing a new business idea, talking to someone of the opposite sex, applying for another job or cleaning the house. Then finding you had put it off until eventually the moment or ‘momentum’ had passed?

Procrastination is the enemy of action and the only way to defeat it is by taking immediate action.

The action taken only needs to be small in order to defeat procrastination – such is its awesome power.

But, that small action, followed by another small action, continuously taken, will defeat Action’s evil twin called ‘Procrastination’ once and for all.

Remember:

‘NOW’ written backwards is ‘WON’.

There is never any valid excuse for not taking action. There is always something that can be done in order to move you along the path on your plan.
Your ultimate power lies in the things that you have left undone.

STEP 04.
Keep the Commitment.

Keeping the commitment develops your belief and increases your motivation, which leads to your success!

To be ‘committed’ to something is completely different to merely having an ‘interest’ in something. When you’re ‘interested’ in something, you do it only when it is convenient.
Being ‘committed’ means doing whatever it takes in order to keep yourself going towards the attainment of that thing.

It’s a fact, if you are not fully ‘committed’, you will never ever achieve your goals.

And that is why, this, the final part of the ‘4 Step Formula for Success’ can be the most difficult to accomplish. This is why many people have failed throughout history to achieve their goals.

And, this is why those who remain ‘committed’ achieve success and the ‘masses’ look on in wonder and say, “How did they do that?”

First, let’s recap the first three steps of the success formula:

  1. Establish a Goal

    – What is it that you want to achieve?

  2. Create an Effective Plan

    – If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

  3. Take Immediate Action

    – A thought without action is a daydream.

Now, none of these three steps require any belief or faith in the process for them to be done. No real emotional connection has to take place in truth.

But, in order to complete step four – which is the realization of step one – the goal, you must invest emotional faith and belief in this if you are to achieve success.

Let’s look again at Step 4:

Keep the Commitment –

This develops belief and increases motivation which leads to success!
This is why this ‘4 Step Formula for Success’ is fool proof. This is why it is the most concise and effective method on the planet. Simplicity in motion.

Remember: for you to succeed you must have some emotional faith and belief in the process.
The more faith or belief that you have in the process the better your chances of success.

Why is Faith or Belief Necessary?

Because so long as your plan is effective, and you are taking appropriate action, you only can fail to reach your goal if you stop short of completion.

And, one of the main reasons most people fail in any endeavour, (after failing to have a clear goal, failing to plan effectively and failing to take consistent action), is not having enough belief or faith in their processes.

Imagine for a moment the building of the Great Wall of China, or the incredible Pyramids in Egypt, or Steve Jobs designing the iPhone, Zuckerberg and Facebook… most things you care to imaginge

Apply this ‘4 Step Formula for Success’ to these amazing feats and then remove any one of the 4 steps.

With the removal of any of these steps, would they have achieved success?

The answer is a resounding and emphatic “No!”

Commitment ‘can’ develop belief where there is none, and it ‘can’ increase belief where there is very little – but having the belief is always better!

Depending upon your own personal goal, your plan and the action that you take, visual or tangible results may not immediately manifest themselves.

Because of this, your continued commitment will slowly increase and enhance your belief day after day. With an unshakeable belief – alongside your commitment to your plan – success in inevitable.

Your self-image is not what you actually see when you look in the mirror. Your self-image is the way that you primarily feel and think about yourself.

Our feelings connected with our self-image are formed by the accumulation of our life interactions – these include our intentions, our thoughts, our attitudes, our beliefs, our language, our behaviours, our environments and our associates.

This self-image is initially formed by our external forces. It then develops and dictates our own internal thoughts, beliefs, reactions and actions – which in turn goes on to reinforce and re-form our external world.

This cycle is important because a negative self-image, created from negative external forces leads to unhappiness, under achievement, depression, un-fulfilment and a host of other mentally limiting conditions.

This pattern occurs repeatedly, and this automatic cycle becomes our self-image, or in basic terms… ‘us’.

We say or think that our self-image is ‘who we actually are’ because we cannot usually logically differentiate between our own thoughts, our actions and our true ‘self’.

These are three completely separate things – yes, it’s weird!

A Question on Self-Image

Are we our thoughts, actions or ‘self’ or are we in fact separate from them?

Instil the words “I must” and “I will” into the voice of your self-image.
The voice of your self-image is your daily self-talk.

Change self-talk such as, “I would like to make money” to “I choose to make extra money”. The verb, (an action word/command), makes the intention strong, empowering and clear. Your intentions expressed in your self-talk should include dynamic verbs such as , I need to, I will, I must, I have to, I opt to, I intend to, I choose to, I am going to…

Have the ‘intention’ to create your own reality based upon how you want to see your reality. Hold that ‘intention’ and never deviate from it.

Apply Logic to Overcome a Poor Self-Image

One of  the more common aspects of a poor self-image – and believe me, there are a lot, is the heighted sense of ‘fear’, ‘uncertainty’ or ‘not feeling good enough’ when faced or placed in common situations.

The words ‘fear’ and ‘failure’ are tags that most people wouldn’t like to be labelled with as they are such negative and destructive tags to wear. So, in order to avoid the embarrassment of these monikers most people remain ‘secure’ in their comfort zone. But, as the saying goes;

“A ship is safe in harbour, but that’s not what ships are for.”

Many of us have seen this sometimes-unhelpful acronym:

F.E.A.R (False Evidence Appearing Real)

Here is a very useful and simple method for dealing with ‘fear’.

The first thing to ask when you are uncertain or fearful about a certain course of action is this:

What is it that you are fearful or uncertain about? What do you actually fear losing?

Get a piece of A4 paper and write the word ‘Blue’ in big letters at the top of the page.

Below this, number each point and write down the very worst-case scenario of everything that you fear in relation to your issue.

On the back of that same A4 piece of paper write the word ‘Red’ in big letters at the top of the page.

Below this, number each point and write down the very best-case outcome scenario of everything if you act against or ignore your fears in relation to your issue.

Now… which side of the paper do you KNOW to be more realistic?

Which side of the paper do you want to become your reality?

There is a great scene in the film The Matrix which highlights this principle using red and blue pills as an analogy.

If you want to be truly successful, you have to overcome your fears, you have to believe that you have the potential to re-create your self-image.

You have to take the ‘red pill’, i.e. the piece of paper titled ‘Red’, and then see for yourself how deep the rabbit hole really goes – you can decide your lifestyle.

But in the back of your mind, if you fear your ability, if you fear the ‘fear’, you fear what people may think, fear upon fear, upon fear. Then keep taking the ‘Blue Pill

Overcome Your Fears And Move Towards Your Success

You don’t have to be great to make a start. But, you must start in order to be great.

Make a life changing decision today. Overcome the fear – and the success will be yours.

So what are you waiting for?

In order to truly express the human spirit or ‘self’ in its fully un-caged essence; to live our true self-image, we have to push the expression of ourselves to the very limit.

We should not hold ourselves back for fear of failure, or ridicule because as Abraham Lincoln said:

‘My great concern is not whether you have failed, but whether you are content with your failure.”

You must have the courage to fully commit to your goals and to take all of the actions necessary to achieve them.

Goals? Where Did They Come From?

Yes. We can’t talk about fears without talking about goals. So let’s quickly do that.

Usually our fears are lurking right there in front of our progress or GOALS. The things that we really want, the things we really yearn for – the apple in the garden of Eden. Not that mouldy old fruit that has fallen on the floor being ravaged by bugs but the real ripe ‘n’ juicy stuff hanging just over there…

Do not set unchallenging, unfulfilling goals because they too will fail to inspire you. After all, where would we be if it were not for those people who did not fear failure? We would all probably still be living in mud huts…

In fact, we would all be dead, because our ancestors would have been ‘afraid’ to go out and hunt for food fearful that they would not have successfully killed any wild beasts or worse still, fearful that they would have been attacked and killed themselves.

Body Builders Love Failure

I really like and admire the way body builders frame the word ‘failure’.

They ALWAYS strive for ‘failure’.

In a training session a body builder will lift the weights doing a series of sets or repetitions – for example 3 sets of 8 repetitions. On the very last set the body builder will finish the repetition only when he or she is unable to lift or curl that particular weight without a bit of assistance and extra encouragement.

This is called ‘lifting to failure’.

At this point, and only at this point, do they feel good about their accomplishment – because they know at the point of ‘failure’ they have given their gym session everything that they have – both physically and mentally. And, more importantly – only at this point of ‘failure’ do they achieve the desired effect; which is muscle growth!

That’s what you need to do…

For each task that you set – go to ‘failure’.

Decide to Decide

Decide to make your own history. Decide to create your own future. Decide to re-design your lifestyle. Decide to make your mark.

Do not wait until next year, next week or next whatever.

Your actions are based upon your beliefs, and it is your actions that lead to results. Therefore, if your belief is weak – your actions will be weak, and as a consequence your results will be weak!

If your belief is strong – your actions will be positive, and your results will be successful!

Re-create your self-image as you want it to be.

Do you ever feel stressed and anxious because you haven’t completed or achieved the things you set out to do that day?

Can’t understand why your to-do list is still three pages long and you’ve been rushed off your feet all day?

Time is a Constant – We Cannot Speed it Up or Slow it Down (Thankfully)

Time is a constant and trying to control or manage it is as futile as when King Canute tried to stop the tide in an attempt to demonstrate his supreme power.

We too need to understand what we can, and what we can’t control in our lives otherwise we will always be left feeling powerless, stressed and anxious.

Here’s a tip about Time Management that will make you happier in life, give you empowerment beyond your wildest dreams and leave you less stressed and anxious…

Do Not Try To Manage Time, Manage Your Activities

Yes, nine words that can revolutionise your whole life. Too simple? Well try this:

1. Decide upon your most important job or task.

In 1941, Management Consultant Dr. Joseph Juran developed his “Vital few and trivial many” law of Time Management after being introduced to the works of Vifredo Pareto and the ‘Pareto Principle’.

His ground-breaking theory suggested that 20% of tasks should be prioritised as they needed 80% of our time to complete, and in contrast the remaining 80% of less important tasks only require 20% of our time.

This is the essence of an “activity focussed strategy” instead of a futile, “time focussed strategy”.

2. Exclude all other jobs and tasks (or distractions if possible).

Do not try to multi-task, this will be counterproductive and dissipate your focus away from your primary objective which leads to sub-conscious stress and anxiety. My own observations also lead me to concluded that once one diversion or multi-task has been added, others begin to be added at will. Therefore giving rise to exponential conscious or sub-conscious stresses and anxieties.

3. Work on this single job or task until completed.

Part of ‘working’ in this context also includes being “mindfully engaged” or “in the zone” with this job or task. It has been shown that the human brain can only perform at its optimum for a sustained period of 90 – 120 minutes after which time performance or creativity wanes exponentially.

So, to combat this performance deterioration, make sure you take as many recharging breaks as necessary. And, unlike the old Time Management Systems which leave you feeling guilty because you’re constantly chasing the clock, this method allows you to take breaks guilt-free because the creative juices are still flowing and subconsciously thinking and find solutions or inspiration for your primary task.

So whether you are eating, shopping, taking a bath or reading a magazine, you will feel that gentle release of guilt-free, constant positive, feel-good energy within you because you are not stressed or anxious.

Using this method, you have controlled or managed the only things which you do have power over – your mindset and your actions.

Try this for five days, it will seem weird at first, but then you’ll realise that time is not your enemy it is just ‘time’. In doing less you can actually achieve more and be happier and less stressed in the process.

As the Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh reportedly cited: “Don’t just do something – sit there.”

Don’t get mentally caught up trying to catch up. And if you still think that time is escaping you, or you’re just not doing enough try this:

Become a Time Accountant

Remember – time is a fixed commodity. We cannot reduce it; we cannot increase it. Therefore become a time accountant for a week and each day make a note of all your daily activities including durations. And, I do mean all – sleeping, eating, chatting, working, travelling, going to the gym, toilet breaks and everything else as well.

At the end of the day add up all of the hours from these activities.

Do this time accountancy for a full seven days and draw your own conclusions. See if you feel better, worse or totally indifferent.

Also don’t forget to account for the time spent watching television, Netflix or YouTube and you’d do well to remember the Groucho Marx quote/joke; “I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns it on, I go into the other room and read a book.”
